THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: BRUTTIUM, CROTON
The facing head coins of Croton feature a portrait of Hera Lakinia in the obverse, and a youthful, nude Heracles reclining on a rock and holding a cup in the reverse. Some Crotoniate depictions of Hera are striking in their beauty and elegance, playing on the contrasting textures of her smooth skin and minutely waving hair. Other (perhaps later) portrayals emphasize the goddess’ elaborate accessories at the expense of harmonious facial proportions. Both styles are presented below.

The dating follows Historia Numorum Italy.
