THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: SICILY, CATANA
The facing head tetradrachms of Catana feature the laureate head of Apollo in the obverse. The reverse shows a quadriga driven by a charioteer, with Nike flying above, holding caduceus and wreath. Apollo is generally represented with dramatic intensity in these coins. His abundant hair, crisscrossed by the laurel leaves of his crown, is particularly striking. The most noted of the masters who signed such finely detailed works was Herakleidas. The facing head drachms from Catana include a quadriga driven by a charioteer in the obverse, and a young river-god, with short horns and long flowing hair in the reverse. Both tetradrachms and drachms are featured below.
