THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: IONIA, CLAZOMENAE |
The facing head coins of Clazomenae feature the laureate head of Apollo in the obverse. The reverse shows a swan standing with open wings, head turned back or forward, depending on the issue. Apollo in these coins has a refined and delicate style, and a remarkably lifelike appearance. Clazomenae was one of very few mint cities of Asia Minor to employ a “signing artist.” Among its most beautiful tetradrachms are those inscribed Theodotos epoiei, “Theodotos made [me].” Some noteworthy examples of facing head coins from Clazomenae are presented below..
