THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: LYCIA
The most commonly seen facing head issue of Lycia depicts the laureate and draped bust of the dynast Perikles in the obverse, and a warrior, nude but for a crested Corinthian helmet, fighting with shield and sword in the reverse. Perikles is portrayed with his hair waving about his head in the manner of Kimon’s Arethusa. In fact, on one of the dies there is even a dolphin in the field beside his hair, proving the Syracusan derivation of the type. Perikles’ face is that of a wizened old warrior, showing a remarkable dignity in some of these coins, as well as a surprising vulnerability in others. Other facing head issues from Lycia feature the helmeted head of Athena (see below).
