THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: RHODES |
The facing head coins of Rhodes feature the head of the sun god Helios in the obverse, and a rose with bud in the reverse. Early Rhodian depictions of Helios tend to be heavy featured, with emphasis on his penetrating gaze, perhaps an artistic expression of the burning intensity of the sun. On the other hand, there are also many examples of an insipid, cherub-like and primitively rendered Helios, which stand in sharp contrast to the masterworks reflected in other Rhodian facing head coins. Some examples of the better specimens are included below. The dating follows R.H.J. Ashton in K. Shipton and A. Meadows, eds., Money and its Uses in the Ancient Greek World (Oxford, 2001), pp. 79–115.
