THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: CILICIA, ISSUS |
The most common facing head coins from Issus feature the draped bust of Athena Parthenos, wearing a triple-crested helmet and necklace in the obverse. The reverse depicts Baaltars (Baal of Tarsus) seated left, holding a lotus-tipped scepter in his right hand. In comparison to most other regions that manufactured facing head coinage, the specimens from Issus are decidedly primitive in design, showing limited artistic style and expression. However, they nonetheless have a certain charm and intensity. They are similar to issues originating from the nearby cities of Tarsus and Mallus.
The dating follows SNG France, vol. 2. Cilicie.
