THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: BOEOTIA, THEBES |
A very few monumental facing heads appear on the staters of Thebes in the latter half of the fifth century and early years of the fourth. At various times the mint of Thebes also produced federal coinage in the name of the Boeotians. The facing heads of this federal coinage present a somewhat simple artistic style, yet they exude warmth and charm nonetheless. These coins portray the wreathed head of Demeter or Kore (Persephone) in the obverse, and Poseidon resting on a trident and holding a dolphin in the reverse.
