THE FACING HEAD COINS OF: KINGDOM OF PAEONIA, AUDOLEON |
The coins of Audoleon feature the facing head of Athena Parthenos on the obverse, and a horse prancing right on the reverse. In the course of his reign, Audoleon employed several slightly different representations of Athena. One, presumably the earliest, is a skilful composition that uses the textures of the three helmet plumes, Athena’s hair, and her pearl necklace to frame her head, which is turned three quarters left. The other varieties are less felicitous, with long helmet plumes waving in the fields on both sides of the head. The head itself may be either frontal, inclined slightly to the left, or inclined slightly to the right. Some dies show extra rows of pellets to indicate spiral curls by Athena’s ears in addition to the longer curls beside her neck. A few examples are rather crude, evidently the work of semi-skilled die cutters imitating the dies of more talented colleagues.
