Catharine C. Lorber:
Catharine C. Lorber began her Larissa studies in 1989, when she had the opportunity to record three Thessalian hoards at Numismatic Fine Arts, a Los Angeles coin firm. The overlapping pattern of these three hoards (Coin Hoards IX, 65, 78, and 121) enabled her to classify the facing head drachms of Larissa into three chronologically distinct groups: early, middle, and late. The large number of early facing head drachms in CH IX, 65 allowed for the publication of a preliminary die study of this coinage: C.C. Lorber, “The early facing head drachms of Thessalian Larissa,” in H. Nilsson, ed., Florilegium Numismaticum: Studia in honorem U. Westermark edita (Stockholm, 1992), pp. 259–282.
Over the years, an interested Greek colleague has generously provided photographs and/or records of four more Thessalian hoards (CH IX, 65, 67, 77, and 87). The last of these was published in order to provide a general overview of the three periods of Larissa’s facing head drachm coinage: C.C. Lorber, “A hoard of facing head Larissa drachms,” SNR 79 (2000), pp. 7–15. Lorber herself recorded (but did not photograph) yet another hoard of Larissa drachms from commerce in 1994 (CH IX, 79). She has also built up a file of specimens in published collections, auction catalogues, and price lists. The resulting data base is quite large, yet not complete, for it does not include the unpublished holdings of the major public collections.
A fuller publication of the hoards is expected in the future. In the meantime, this website presents an updated version of Lorber’s corpus of early facing head drachms, as well as preliminary die studies and corpora for the middle facing head drachms, late facing head drachms, and staters. The illustrations are mostly drawn from online sources. For reasons of photographic quality, copyright, or other publication commitments, images of the hoard coins are generally excluded, except for some early facing head drachms from CH IX, 65.
Lorber has spent most of her professional career as a cataloguer for various coin firms. Her other numismatic research interests include North Greek coinage, the Seleucids, and the Ptolemies.
